Crafts for Kids for Memorial Day

Crafts for Kids for Memorial Day thumbnail
Flags are traditionally placed on graves of veterans on Memorial Day.

Incorporate craft projects when teaching kids about Memorial Day. Celebrated the last Monday in May, the holiday recognizes U.S. citizens who died while serving their country in the military. Traditions include visiting cemeteries and laying flags and other patriotic memorabilia on gravestones of those remembered. Take time to create patriotic crafts and décor---use traditional red, white and blue colors to decorate Memorial Day items. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Tissue Paper Flag

    • Create a tissue paper flag children can use for door decorations on Memorial Day. Use manila cardboard folders to create the backing of the flag. Have children draw an outline of an American flag using pencil. Cut red, blue and white tissue paper in small squares measuring about 1 square inch.

Pour a small amount of glue onto a paper plate. Have the children wad up the tissue paper, turn their pencils upside-down and stick the tissue paper on the eraser. They'll dip the tissue paper into glue, then stick the different color paper bunches onto the flag background in the appropriate places. Continue to fill up the flag using the tissue paper technique until all areas are covered. Punch two holes onto the flag and attach string.

    String of Stars

    • Have children cut out a large star with construction paper. Do not use a template, so the stars are all different and unique shapes and sizes. Let each child use red, white and blue paint to decorate and paint the stars. Add glitter, feathers and puff paint for additional texture. Use a hole punch and add a hole in the left and right arms of the star. Tie the stars together to create a large garland of stars for Memorial Day room decor.

    Memorial Day Streamers

    • Paint a medium wooden dowel rod in patriotic colors using craft paint. Tie crepe paper, string or gift wrapping ribbon to the end of the dowel: The more attached items, the fuller the streamer will be. Use a variety of colors and textures to add interest. Have children create a paper banner saying "Happy Memorial Day," using white butcher paper and markers and writing in large, decorative lettering. Tie the banner to the dowel by punching holes in the side of the banner and tying with string.
