Honolulu is the cultural center of modern Hawaii. A true melting pot of cultures, it is a crossroads between Asia and the United States. It's not surprising that this eclectic city boasts a rich and varied restaurant scene. Following suit, Honolulu hosts a number of top-notch and wide-ranging vegetarian restaurants. Menus include vegetarian fare (food that contains no meat or seafood) and vegan items (food that contains no animal products, including dairy and eggs).

Legend Vegetarian Restaurant, formerly named the Buddhist Vegetarian Restaurant, serves vegetarian, but mainly vegan cuisine. The Gayot guide describes the fare succinctly by describing it as a Buddhist-style vegetarian menu that tantalizes vegetarians and carnivores alike. The menu includes tofu dishes, various stir-fries, dim sum and other Asian vegetarian staples. The Gayot guide specifically suggests an entrée not on the menu, a mock butterfish, and recommends that customers order it braised in anything other than sweet and sour sauce to get the taste and quality similar to fish, although it is made from wheat gluten and tofu. The restaurant is closed on Wednesdays, but is open every other day for lunch and dinner. Takeout is available.

This is the type of fare served at the hip and stylish Hale Modern Macrobiotic Cuisine, located in Honolulu's shopping district, Ala Moana. The menu features such items as sweet and sour soy protein, teriyaki tempeh with lotus roots, and pita bread with hijiki and veggie meat. While the restaurant features mostly vegetarian cuisine, there is a daily local fish plate and a salmon salad available. TravelChannel.com describes Hale as a popular restaurant for vegetarians and others who prefer reasonably priced, tasty, yet health-conscious dishes. The tofu and curry dishes are especially popular.
