One popular (if difficult) style of puzzle is the sliding tile game. A picture is divided up into nine pieces, three-by-three. One piece has nothing on it and is removed. The eight pieces are then mixed up. The patient puzzle solver must slide the pieces carefully so that they all fall into place carefully. There are many versions of this game available and the Halloween Tile Game, available at Squigly's Playhouse is another fine example of this style. The picture for this puzzle features a skeleton standing in front of a scary looking house with "Happy Halloween" on top. The picture on the tiles never changes, so there is limited replay value. However, the game controls very simply. Click on the tiles near the empty space and they will slide into the space. Use careful problem-solving to get the pieces in place.

Mahjong is an ancient Chinese board game. It consists of tiles with pictures piled atop each other. Only tiles that are exactly alike can be removed. Tiles that have a tile on top or have a tile right next to them on the left and right cannot be removed until they have no tile on top and at least one side free of a tile. Careful strategy is required to remove all of the tiles. There are many types of tiles and layouts for mahjong, and Spooky Mahjong, available at The Kidz Page is an excellent Halloween mahjong game. Featuring the traditional mahjong layout, it features Halloween-themed tiles instead of the traditional Chinese symbols. Ghosts, witches, pumpkins and many other ghouls decorate the tiles. 3D Halloween Mahjong, available for free download at Shareware Connection is a much more advanced and adaptable version of Spooky Mahjong. The game play is essentially the same: click two like tiles to remove them and use careful strategy to remove them all. However, the main difference is the presentation. The graphics in this game are advanced for a free game, with excellent backgrounds including spooky graveyards at night. The sound is also excellent with wolf howls, rattling chains, cackling witches, thunderous wind and many other unique sounds. The graphics are 3D, meaning you can see the depth of your playing field more fully which can help you plan strategy much easier. The camera is movable, and there is a hint option. This free game is excellent for anybody looking for free Halloween game fun.
