Dog Vaccination Dangers

Vaccinations for dogs have been traditionally administered from the time they are puppies with booster shots annually as they get older. Vaccination dangers, however, have brought vaccinations under close scrutiny in the veterinary medicine world. Certain symptoms are key clues to adverse reactions and dangers in dogs.

  1. Fever

    • Fever is a common side effect of vaccinations in dogs. Normally, keeping the dog cool and well hydrated is enough to prevent any further complications as the fever subsides. However, severe dehydration and unconsciousness can occur in extreme cases and veterinary attention is necessary to prevent brain damage or death.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Allergic reactions of various levels of severity can appear in dogs as a result of vaccinations. The most common symptom of an allergic reaction is hives on the skin usually due to some allergenic component in the vaccination. More severe symptoms that can be potentially dangerous are swelling of internal tissues such as tracheal tissue which can close off airways and create difficulties breathing.

    Shock and Seizures

    • Reduced heart rates, drops in blood pressure and general weakness can be symptoms of shock. Color changes are also a symptom of shock and the dog should be taken immediately to a veterinarian for treatment. Seizures can also result with similar symptoms as well as convulsive movements or unconsciousness.

    Behavioral Problems

    • Some dogs develop behavioral problems due to vaccines. Obsessive compulsive disorder is commonly seen where the dogs constantly lick themselves or perform odd behaviors such as chasing their tails. Other dogs may develop aggression that wasn't present prior to the vaccination.

    Vomiting and Diarrhea

    • Many of the dangers associated with vaccinations are due to their toxic levels in the dog's body since numerous vaccinations are often given at one time. Vomiting and diarrhea are common side effects as the body tries to remove the toxins. Excessive cases of either symptom can lead to severe dehydration.
