Students in the Fire Science Technology program at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, study basic fire prevention and fighting techniques. The program provides a mixture of in class work and field activities. Students in the program can select from a certificate, which qualifies them to work for most fire fighting companies, or they can continue through the program and earn an associates degree with an emphasis in Fire Administration (leading to careers in fire-department management).

Students in the Lakeland Community College Fire Science Engineering program benefit from the on-campus fire lab, in which they have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the art of fire fighting. Lakeland offers a two-year associate degree program that is aimed specifically at graduating high-school students, or an extension program for existing firefighters who simply want to learn more about firefighting techniques. Students in the program can earn an associate of applied science degree.
