Braid Styles for Black Women

Shares & Saves

Braided hairstyles are commonly worn by black women. Generally speaking, black women's hair is more prone to damage and breakage than other women's hair due to the fact that it does not hold moisture well. In addition, the hair tends to be quite coarse and curly. Black women do not usually wash their hair as often as do other women. As such, braids are an excellent option for black women as you can easily clean your scalp without actually having to wash your hair. The hair can be braided in thick braids or in thin braids, depending on your preference. Once you have braids in your hair, they can be styled differently day to day.

Micro Braids

  • Micro braids are a common braid style seen on black women. They are seen on African American women and Caribbean women alike. As they are difficult to do on yourself, they should be done at a salon by a professional. It usually takes several hours to have your whole head micro-braided. Thus, most women who have it done wear the style for a long time. Micro braids are tiny and delicate and can be worn in ponytails, updos and any number of hairstyles. To keep them looking good, mist them regularly with hair oil.

  • Cornrows are a braided style that can be worn by men and women alike. They also have historical significance to many in the black community. They are considered a low-maintenance hairstyle. However, you will need to invest the time to get them done in the beginning. It can be a lengthy process. When your hair is braided in a cornrowed style, it's braided very closely to the scalp. An upward motion is used so that the braids are in a smooth line and are raised up. Use a spray conditioner on your scalp to keep it moisturized.

Partial Braids with Loose Ends

  • A romantic and elegant braid style for black women is partial braids with loose, curled ends. This is a common braid style for weddings. It works best on hair that is shoulder length or longer. The hair is braided in micro braids three quarters of the way down the hair. The hair that is not braided can be curled with a curling iron into romantic, loose curls. This style of braids can be styled in several ways. It looks great in a ponytail, a half updo and a full updo.
