While no one is sure of how New Jersey came to be described as the Garden State, it is clear that the name remains a valid description. The state has numerous parks and campgrounds along the Jersey Shore that offer an inviting setting for visitors to camp, hike, canoe and enjoy other activities in a beautiful setting.

  1. Cedar Creek Campground

    • Cedar Creek Campground has a variety of campsites, including those for tents and RVs as well as trailer and cabin rentals. Canoeing is the big draw for this campsite, which is on Cedar Creek. The campground is open year round, has security, and allows pets that are leashed.

    Atlantic City North Family Campground

    • The Atlantic City North Family Campground is near the Jersey Shore and has campsites for RV and tent campers alike. This campground also offers rental cabins for those who want a bit more comfort. Those who do prefer tents will have access to rustic and spacious areas available just for them found just past the RV area. The campground offers security, an on-site store and a pancake breakfast on Sunday mornings. Open year-round, the area welcomes leashed pets.

    Bass River State Forest Campground

    • The Bass River State Forest was the first state forest obtained by New Jersey. Lake Absegami was built decades later and has become a favorite camping destination for people in and around the Jersey shore area. With more than 150 sites for tents and additional cabins, huts and shelters, there is room for all types of campers. The campsite is open year-round.

    Wharton State Forest

    • Wharton State Forest has the most remote areas in all of New Jersey, with more than 100,000 acres to explore and 500 miles of trails. Most of the campsites are rugged, offering few or no modern-day features. Fire pits, outhouses and water pumps are at several campsites. The state forest is open year-round.

    Cheesequake State Park Campgrounds

    • Finding a camping location less than 40 miles from Manhattan may seem impossible. But Cheesequake State Park Campgrounds is just such a place. This campground provides access to the nearby Jersey Shore beaches, an arts center and the Garden State Parkway.The 53 campsites are open between April and October.
