Decorate your home with ornamental grass.

People enjoy having ornamental grasses in their homes because many of them are low maintenance. They require no pruning and some do not have flowers, eliminating the need to pinch dead blossoms or clean up seeds. Available in dozens of colors and shapes, ornamental grasses need little fertilization and watering is usually uncomplicated. Low-growing ornamental grasses are perfect for tables and shelves, while higher grasses can be placed near windows for decoration and privacy. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Umbrella Grass

    • Umbrella grass grows on long, stiff green stems that sprout into tufts of heavy, grass-like leaves. These leaves bend down on themselves like tropical umbrellas. Tiny white flowers bloom among the leaves. You can propagate it through division, cuttings or seed. It can grow in any area with partial shade to full sun, which means you can put it in the middle of the room or set it on a sunny windowsill. Umbrella grass can grow up to 3 feet tall when mature, so it makes a good floor plant, too. Keep the soil soggy; umbrella grass likes wet feet. You can even pot it and place it in an indoor water feature deep enough to fill the plant's drip tray. The umbrella grass will thrive there.

    Silver Mondo Grass

    • A member of the lily family, silver mondo grass sprouts green and white striped leaves that grow to about 10 inches and bend under their own weight. From a distance, the leaves have a silvery-green sheen that gives this plant its name. Growing in small clumps, it likes a slightly acidic soil and enjoys partial shade to full sun. Plant it with a little peat moss and set it wherever you like, so long as it gets sun during part of the day. Though silver mondo grass is slightly drought tolerant, it grows best with regular watering.

    Cyperus Ornamental Grass

    • Also called wild spike, cyperus ornamental grass has long, woody green stems with small blades of grass radiating from the top of each stem. The short grass blades bend down on themselves, giving each stem the appearance of a minature palm tree. Cyperus grass grows best in very warm and moist conditions, making it ideal as an indoor plant, especially in areas with cold temperatures or extreme seasonal changes. It grows about 30 inches at its tallest and is best placed in front of windows as a decorative screen. It likes full sun to partial shade and does best with constantly wet soil; make sure the flood tray always has some water in it.

    Fountain Bamboo

    • Fountain bamboo is more slender than other varieties of bamboo. It has dark purple stems that sprout dark green leaves from soil-level to the tip of each stem. Though many homeowners value fountain bamboo as a privacy screen in their yards, it also does very well as an indoor plant so long as it gets sufficient water. Keep the soil damp but not soaked and water it about every other day. Fountain bamboo grows tall, so it does well as a floor container plant in rooms with bright, indirect light. Full sun can cause yellowing and leaf wilt.
