Use Christmastime to involve youth groups in activities.

Christmas is a great time during the year to gather the youth group together and have fun while making a difference in people's lives. Utilize Christmastime to teach the youth about the spirit of giving. Activities are one of the best ways to teach people lifelong lessons. Lecturing is effective to a degree, but actually providing the youth in your church with the opportunity to sacrifice for others can change their life. You can use your normal youth meeting and have everyone in attendance participate in one of these activities.

  1. Baking

    • Baking is one activity that marks the holiday season. Have the youth in church volunteer time out of their week or weekend to come to the church to bake Christmas cookies together that can be used to give away to families in need. You'll need to prepare all the ingredients and either have the students bring the needed ingredients or have the church purchase them. Splitting the youth into different groups will ensure everyone gets an opportunity to be involved and will help organize the effort. Assign one person to lead each group in making a different cookie. Once the cookies are done, arrange them on plates, wrap them and have the youths deliver them to families in need.

    Caroling

    • Christmas caroling is a fun event that will bring the youth group together and will brighten people in your local neighborhood's spirits. Choose songs that are Christian-themed, whether hymns or modern worship songs. After the caroling, you can have someone in the group share with the household about your church and provide literature for the home to look over. Ask the family if they have any needs you can pray for them about. Use this activity as a time to encourage neighbors and lift their spirits.

    Serve

    • Have the youth create a service that can be performed at a soup kitchen or nursing home. Some ideas that can be done during the performance are drama sketches, songs and testimonies of God's faithfulness. The service should be centered on Christ as the reason for Christmas. The youths can serve before or after the service in the soup kitchen or nursing home by helping clean, serve food or make needed improvements to the building. Allow the youths to use their gifts to make a difference in people's lives that are otherwise lonely.
