Drivers charged with DUI in California will have to attend a program.

Drinking and driving is not only a serious crime but can result in deadly consequences. California has made alcohol and substance abuse classes mandatory for all drivers charged with reckless driving, with a measurable blood alcohol content or a DUI. These programs grow in length and complexity based on the severity of the charge, and as DUI charges mount. California's DUI programs, along with counseling, can help save lives.

  1. Wet Reckless Program

    • The Wet Reckless Program is designed for drivers charged with reckless driving, with a measurable amount of alcohol in their blood stream. The Wet Reckless Program is 12 hours long over a period of six weeks. Each class is presided over by a lecturer and involves multimedia, lectures and discussions on the dangers of alcohol abuse.

    First Offender Program

    • The First Offender Program is designed for drivers who have been convicted of their first DUI. Drivers who had a blood alcohol content under .20 will take a 15-week, 30-hour class that covers the dangers of alcohol abuse and pertinent California DUI laws. Drivers who had a blood alcohol content of .20 or higher will complete a nine-month program covering the same issues as the three-month program.

    The 18-Month Program

    • Drivers charged with their second DUI will have to take an 18-month program. This program consists of 12 hours of substance abuse counseling, 52 hours of group counseling, six hours of weekly monitoring and individual interviews during the first 12 months of the program.

    The 30-Month Program

    • Drivers charged with a third DUI must take a 30-month DUI program. This program may also be given to anyone charged with a DUI under the discretion of county authorities. This program consists of up to 300 hours of community service, personal interviews to be held on a regular basis, 78 hours of group counseling and 12 hours of substance abuse education.
