Art Colleges in Maryland
Maryland is home to several schools devoted exclusively to the teaching of studio art, including the Maryland Institute College of Art and its constituent colleges and schools, and the Schuler School of Fine Arts. Students can pursue work in a variety of studio media at these schools in preparation for careers as professional artists or teachers.

The Maryland Institute College of Art, commonly referred to simply as MICA, was founded in 1826. As of 2009, the school had about 1,850 students. The college offers Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degree programs in 15 different studio areas, including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, fiber, ceramics, and graphic design. The college also offers Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree programs in graphic design, photographic and electronic media, sculpture, painting, and more, and Master of Arts (MA) degree programs in teaching, art education, and community arts. Maryland Institute College of Art tied for 4th in U.S. News and World Report's 2008 ranking of fine arts graduate schools.

Hoffberger School of Painting

The Hoffberger School of Painting, a division of the Maryland Institute College of Art, was founded in 1965. The school accepts fewer than ten students a year to its Master of Fine Arts degree program in painting. The program combines independent studio work with liberal arts seminars, frequent critiques, field trips, meetings with visiting artists, and more. The program prepares students for professional careers as artists or university professors. All Hoffberger students have private studio space in which to work.

Schuler School of Fine Arts

The sculptor Hans C. Schuler founded the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore in 1959. The school is located in the original studio of the sculptor Hans K. Schuler, father of Hans C. Schuler. The school offers four-year technical training programs in drawing, painting, and sculpture in the tradition of the old masters. Students learn how to mix and prepare materials for work in various media. Students and faculty eat together in the building's dining room.
