Illinois Driving Laws
Like all states, Illinois has a long list of driving laws designed to keep motorists safe as they travel through the Land of Lincoln. Fortunately, most of these driving laws are common sense: Don't speed. Wear your seat belt. Use your headlights at night. But if you don't know the state's rules of the road, you could set yourself up for a hefty ticket or a long Saturday afternoon at driving school.

One of Illinois' newest driving laws forbids motorists from typing, reading or sending text messages while driving. This law went into effect Jan.1, 2010. The only time drivers can send, read or type text messages is when they are parked on the shoulder of a roadway and the car's gear shift is situated in the "Park" or "Neutral" position. Drivers who don't follow this rule are subject to fines.
No Headsets

Another of Illinois' newer driving laws involves headsets: Namely, motorists can't wear them while driving. Illinois law defines headsets as devices that allow drivers to receive electronic communications from another party. Hearing aids, of course, are exempt from this rule.

Odd Laws

Like all states, Illinois has some driving laws that seem extremely specific. For instance, it is illegal for motorists in Illinois to drive over fire hoses, unless the firefighter in command gives the OK. You are also not allowed to ride in a house trailer while it is being towed on a road or highway. If you are in an accident, you are not allowed to move a damaged car from the road without also removing all pieces of glass and other debris at the same time. You are not allowed to push a car or other vehicle on a rural highway. There is an exception, though: If leaving the car on the rural road would cause a hazard, then you are allowed to push it off the road.
