Reading to your child shows love.

Short stories help kids learn about the world around them. They can be purely for entertainment or for educational purposes. Stories can communicate ethical messages and instill values that last a lifetime, while stimulating imagination and confronting reality. You can find plenty of fresh angles and situations to use when presenting timeless topics to children.

  1. Gaining Emotional Control

    • Short stories for kids can show how to overcome negative emotions such as fear. A story about a child's visit to a zoo can help show how to overcome a fear of animals and how to enjoy them as friends by having a pet dog or learning to ride a pony.

You can explore other emotions in a story for younger kids about a tea pot that always went around blowing off steam and losing friends because he could not control his anger. Show practical ways to gain self control and demonstrate the consequences of uncontrolled anger.

A story defining the different meanings of the word "love" would help children understand how the words "I love you" mean a variety of things in different situations. Friendship love, brotherly love, love of country, romance and intimate love in marriage can all be illustrated by dialogue and pictures.

    Making the Right Decisions

    • Stories can guide children in making the right decisions when faced with ethical choices. One story idea would show how a young boy responds when he finds a lost wallet with $200 dollars in it. Let the reader see that positive surprises can happen when you make the right decisions.

Another story can explore the decision to tell an adult if you witness someone doing something wrong. This story helps kids see when it is responsible to report a crime and when are you just being a "snitch."

    Dealing With Differences

    • Short stories can also help children understand people from different cultural backgrounds. For example, you could write a story about a young Christian girl who attends a service at a Mosque with an Islamic friend. The next week they attend a Christian church. The two children can talk about their religious beliefs.

Your short story could also help kids understand differences in physical ability by telling what it is like to be in a wheelchair for a day. Your story could trace the events of a day through the eyes of a young girl who wanted to learn how her life would be different if she were required to use a wheelchair.

In today's world, I find it difficult to find new ideas to help the children in our lives develop in a positive way. Your writings, especially those directed toward the young, are both helpful and enlightening. Thank you, it is truly a gift.
