Visitors to U.S. art museums will no doubt find something to enjoy.

Art lovers in the United States have a wide variety of museums from which to choose. Ranking U.S. art museums by popularity using the most recently available annual attendance figures is perhaps the most objective approach. Museums generally provide shops, cafes, guided and unguided tours, special events and programs. Special exhibitions feature little-seen work or provide an in-depth presentations of a topic or artist. The museum members of the Smithsonian Institution offer free admission. Admission fees vary among private museums.

Andrew W. Mellon created the National Gallery of Art in 1937 as his gift to America. The neoclassical West Building showcases Mellon’s personal collection. In 1978, the more modern East Building opened and is comprised of mostly 20th-century works of art. Adjacent to the West building lays the National Gallery Sculpture Garden.
