A degree in music performance is beneficial to anyone seeking a career in music. Just ask the 80 percent of graduates from The Cleveland Institute of Music who work in the music field as of 2010. The Juilliard School was founded as the Institute of Musical Art in 1905 by Dr. Frank Damrosch, who wished to create a school to rival European music conservatories. One of Juilliard's goals is to "provide an educational environment that fosters the artistic, intellectual and personal growth of its students and prepares them to embark on successful careers and productive lives as artists and citizens..." The school offers bachelor of music degrees in composition, guitar, harpsichord, jazz studies, orchestral instruments, organ, piano and voice. It offers master of music degrees in collaborative piano, composition, conducting (orchestral), guitar, harpsichord, historical performance, jazz studies, orchestral instruments, organ, piano and voice, as well as several diploma programs.
The Music Division holds hundreds of events each year with help from students in chamber music, vocal/opera, resident ensembles and jazz ensembles. The Lila Acheson Wallace Library holds 68,000 scores, 20,000 books and 25,000 recordings. Juilliard also features several recital halls, 84 practice rooms and more than 200 pianos.

Berklee College of Music

Lawrence Berk founded The Berklee College of Music as the Schillinger House in 1945. It was the first U.S. school to teach jazz. It offers a four-year baccalaureate degree and professional diploma in 12 different majors, as of 2010. Performance majors demonstrate mastery of their skills by completing performance portfolios, including senior recitals. They also participate in school ensembles. Berklee has received many awards, including Grammys, Latin Grammys, Oscar, Emmys, and many more.
The Stan Getz Media Center and Library contains 33,000 recordings, 23,000 scores and 28,000 books. Students have access to 250 computer-based music workstations, 13 recording studios and 306 practice rooms.

The Cleveland Institute of Music

The mission of The Cleveland Institute of Music, founded in 1920, is "to provide exceptionally talented students from around the world an outstanding, thoroughly professional education in the art of music performance." According to the college's website in 2010, 80 percent of its alumni perform with the top music organizations in the world. The school offers bachelor of music, master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees. Areas of study include strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, keyboard, voice/opera, chamber music, conducting, composition and music theory.
Students participate in more than 300 student recitals and 100 music concerts each year. The Institute's Recording Services department offers recording studios comparable to commercial music studios. The Technology Learning Center offers workstations with Midi keyboards and stereo headphones.
