Colleges in Florida With Environmental Science & Engineering
A number of universities in Florida offer degrees in environmental engineering and science, fields that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by more than 28 percent from 2008 to 2018. These public universities range in size and are located throughout the state. Florida's environmental engineering and science colleges grant both bachelor's and graduate degrees, preparing students for a variety of careers, from consulting to design to politics.

Florida Gulf Coast University

Located in Fort Myers, Florida Golf Coast University is a public university with more than 8,800 undergraduates. The university's Whitaker School of Engineering grants a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental engineering, which incorporates studies in the management of wastewater, solid and hazardous waste management, and air and water quality control. Through the College of Arts & Sciences, students can also earn a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science. In the undergraduate program, students study ecology, conservation, oceanography, zoology and public policy, and they spend time completing work in laboratory settings and in off-campus internships. For athletes, the school has 14 intercollegiate and 18 intramural teams. Other activities include six Greek organizations and around 125 student-run groups and clubs.

Florida International University

Founded in 1965, Florida International University is a Miami-based public university with more than 35,000 undergraduates. The school's engineering program is one of the highest-rated at the college, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The school grants bachelor's and master's degrees in environmental engineering, as well as a dual degree that allows students to receive both degrees with only five years of study. A master's degree program in environmental engineering is also available in an entirely online format. The environmental studies program, which also grants bachelor's and master's degrees, focuses on international public policy and economics. Admission to Florida International is very competitive; only one-third of those who apply receive an invitation to attend the university, explains Barron's. The school sponsors 17 intercollegiate and 14 intramural sports teams. Students can also participate in 20 different Greek organizations and around 150 student groups on campus.

With a combined undergraduate and graduate enrollment of more than 50,000 students, the University of Central Florida is the third-largest university in the United States. The public school, which is located in Orlando, opened in 1963. The programs offered at the university's College of Engineering & Computer Sciences is among the most highly rated at the school, notes the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. Water supply management, wastewater treatment and green construction are the primary focuses of the college's environmental engineering program, which grants bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The university offers 16 intercollegiate and nearly 100 intramural sports teams, 44 Greek organizations and more than 375 student groups and clubs.
