Beverage Can Recycling Benefits

We use a whopping 80 billion soda cans every year. What's great about aluminum cans is that they can be recycled over and over, so there is less and less need for manufacturers to mine for and purchase new aluminum. When you recycle your soda can, you are not only benefiting others, there is also a key personal benefit.

  1. Environmental Benefits

    • When you recycle cans, you are reducing the litter in the environment as well as the amount of valuable aluminum that finds its way into landfills. Each can takes up to 500 years to biodegrade in a landfill, but because you cared to recycle, it will be remanufactured into another can and reused. The intangible and intrinsic benefit of recycling--knowing that you are reducing waste and contributing to a clean environment--is also a very valuable benefit to recycling cans.

    Benefits Your Town

    • When you recycle your beverage cans with your town's program, you are benefiting your community financially. Some towns offer color-coordinated recycling bins for various articles, including cans. The towns collect the cans on trash days and then redeem them for cash at commercial outlets. The town can then use these funds to support local programs, fire and police, and the various administration costs that keep your city in operation.

    Financial Benefit for Yourself

    • If your state participates in a can redemption program, where you are paid a small deposit fee for each can you recycle, you could make a small side income from your efforts. States that have what are called "bottle bills" will pay you anywhere between 5 and 10 cents per can. Simply gather your cans over the course of a week or month and then bring them into a redemption center for cash payment.
