Lisbon has become a popular destination for students.

Lisbon, the capital and largest city in Portugal, houses an array of universities and institutes that offer undergraduate and graduate degrees. Many English-speaking students consider Lisbon an ideal location for studying abroad for its respected universities, unique culture and nightlife and relative safety compared with other European capitals.

  1. The University of Lisbon

    • The University of Lisbon, founded in 1911, is a public university composed of eight faculties, including the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Medicine. The university also contains many smaller noted research institutes, including some that do pioneering work in molecular science. The university has approximately 20,000 students.

    Technical University of Lisbon

    • The Technical University of Lisbon is another large public university located in the capital. The university is slightly larger than the University of Portugal and focuses on trades such as agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine and architecture. The university was founded in 1930 as a confederation of many smaller schools, but today all of the faculties work together on one main campus.

    New University of Lisbon

    • The New University of Lisbon, founded in 1970, is Lisbon's newest university. Unlike Portugal's two other large universities, the New University is geared toward undergraduates and takes a liberal arts approach to education. The school has about 12,000 undergraduate students and 2,000 graduate students.
