Watermelon Crafts for Kids
-
-
One of the staples of summer is watermelons. While school is out during the summer months, keep your children occupied by helping them assemble watermelon crafts. These crafts can be a resource for teaching young children about colors and numbers. If you are a teacher, plan a watermelon-themed week of lessons toward the end of the school year as you and your students say hello to summer.
Watermelon Art
-
The complementary colors of green and red in watermelon art can brighten any proud parent's refrigerator. Have students cut one paper plate in half. For younger children, cut the paper plates. The children can then decorate their plates using washable markers or crayons.
Watermelon Slices
-
Similar to the watermelon halves paper art, this decorated art craft emulates watermelon slices. One single paper plate can be shared among four children, with each quarter representing an individual slice.
Watermelon Letter Holder
-
Assist children in cutting a paper plate in half. Have them glue the inside edges of each half together. This will leave a "slot" between the plates to hold your letters. Children can then decorate each half to create a watermelon rind, flesh and seeds.
Watermelon Wind Stick
-
The watermelon wind stick is a simple craft to assemble. Cut red and green wrapping tissue paper into wide strips. Help children glue around the circumference of each end on a paper towel roll. Finally, have them draw black seeds on the outer surface of the paper towel roll all the way around.
Watermelon Napkin Holder
-
With a paper plate, cereal box, ruler and a pair of scissors, kids can create a napkin holder. In this craft, the cereal box holds the napkins. Snack cracker boxes also work well for this project. Cut a paper plate in half and have the kids decorate it to look like a watermelon--green rind, red flesh, and black seeds. Place one plate half on each side of the holder and glue into place.
