Lexington, the second-largest city in Kentucky, was home to more than 282,000 residents as of July 2008, reports City-Data.com. Because of its large population, the city has become a center for education and home to both traditional four-year, junior and technical colleges. Public and private colleges in Lexington grant degrees and certificates in a variety of areas.

  1. University of Kentucky

    • Founded in 1865, the University of Kentucky is a public land-grant college. The university has an undergraduate enrollment of more than 18,000 students, 85 percent of whom are Kentucky residents, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The school's largest academic programs are finance, accounting and marketing, while its pharmacy, architecture and allied health programs are its highest-rated, according to Barron's. The school offers an innovative Academic Common Market program that allows students to spend a semester at a number of universities in the South as well as study abroad program in more than 30 countries.

    Transylvania University

    • The Christian Church Disciples of Christ founded Transylvania University in 1870 and it now has more than 1,100 undergraduate students. U.S. News and World Report awarded the school the 85th-place ranking among all liberal arts colleges in the United States in 2010. Business, biology and psychology are the school's largest degree programs, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. Around 99 percent of all incoming freshmen and 60 percent of returning students receive financial aid at Transylvania, and the school offers a work study program. The school offers a semester study program in Washington, D.C., and study abroad in more than 15 countries.

    Bluegrass Community & Technical College

    • Located on the campus of the University of Kentucky, Bluegrass Community & Technical College is a public, two-year junior college. The school opened in 2005, when Lexington Community College and Central Kentucky Technical College were combined by the state legislature. The largest programs at the school are cosmetology, business management, marketing, surgical technology, early childhood education, security management, dental laboratory technology, automotive technology, respiratory therapy and nursing. About 49 percent of students at the school are full-time, while the rest attend classes on a part-time basis, reports the college. The school offers housing, tutoring services and career placement assistance.

    Spencerian College Lexington

    • A private institution, Spencerian College Lexington offers six-month diplomas and two-year associate degrees with day and evening courses available in every program of study. The school offers a four-day work week for full-time students rather than a traditional five-day week. Programs include medical assisting, medical coding and transcription, drafting, computer science and electronics repair. Job placement assistance and financial aid are offered at the college.
