Web page design is a growing field, and there are several schools in Michigan that offer degrees or certificates in web design. Some of the schools require you to be on campus, while others offer online courses as well. The length of their programs also varies. The courses will prepare you to either work for a company or start your own web page design business.

DeVry University offers an Associate of Applied Science in web graphic design degree at its Southfield campus, or you can take courses online or a combination of both. The program requires 67 credit hours. Courses include digital imaging fundamentals, web design principles, HTML programming language, information design, web animation and instructional design for multimedia. By the end of the program, your hands-on studies will provide you with a wide range of design samples to create a professional portfolio to show prospective employers. Some of the companies you will be qualified to work for include advertising agencies, marketing firms and in-house corporate communications departments. Ninety percent of DeVry graduates are employed in their respective fields within six months.

Baker College

Baker College offers five web development programs: a certificate, on-campus or online; Associate of Applied Science, on-campus or online; and a Bachelor of Applied Science, online. Each of the on-campus programs is offered at multiple locations. The certificate program consists of 68 hours of study and provides the skills you need to design and implement websites. Some of the courses include HTML programming, graphic imaging, database applications and web scripting. General education classes such as English, math and psychology are required. The associate's degree program includes the same courses as the certificate, with additional emphasis on marketing and computer information systems. In this program, you'll complete 97 credit hours. The bachelor's program targets the programming and development skills you'll need to create interactive, database-driven websites. In addition to the associate's degree courses, you'll take such classes as system modeling, web server administration and a variety of programming classes. For this program, 213 credit hours are required.

The Art Institute of Michigan

The Art Institute of Michigan offers associate's and bachelor's degrees in web design and interactive media, either at the Novi, Michigan, campus or online. Web design courses include HTML programming, graphic design for the screen, website development using current applications, web animation and network technology. For the interactive media portion of the course, you'll learn video production and how to create special effects and computer games. If you're working toward the bachelor's degree, you'll delve into these courses at a much deeper level. The bachelor's degree requires 124 hours vs. 64 for the associate's. The associate's degree will qualify you for such jobs as a computer graphic designer, website designer or layout artist. With the bachelor's degree, you can seek entry-level positions as an animator, special effects artist and interactive designer.
