Scrabble Solitaire Rules

Scrabble solitaire follows the same rules as the multiplayer board game Scrabble, but is for one player. Scrabble is a popular word game, where players create words out of hand-picked letter tiles. Each new word must build upon a letter already present on the board. The Scrabble board consists of a grid on which letter tiles are placed. Scrabble solitaire may be played against a clock, measuring the time it takes to achieve a certain score.

  1. Scrabble Board and Tiles

    • The Scrabble board is made of spaces in a square grid that measures 15 inches long by 15 inches wide. The game consists of 100 tiles, 98 tiles have one letter and two tiles are blank. Each letter tile also has a point value written on it. The blank tiles serve as “wild card” tiles and the player can use them as any letter in the alphabet. Use of the blank tiles award the player no points and once used on the board in a specific word must then remain the same letter through the game. On the Scrabble board there are spaces which award the player extra points for either the letter he places on the space or the whole word, depending on the space. Extra point spaces are designated for “double letter score”, “triple letter score”, “double word score” and “triple word score”. Extra points can only be used once and can not be awarded to a new word created using the base word.

    Playing the Game

    • Because Scrabble solitaire is played with only player, the player will pick seven tiles out of the tile bag. Using the seven letters, the player must try to create a word on the board. The player must always position the first word across the middle space (the star square) and the word counts as a double word score. After each new word, the player picks new letter tiles, so she always have seven tiles on hand. If the player can use all seven letters in one round, she is awarded a 50 point bonus. Only words that are in an English language dictionary may be used. Proper nouns, prefixes, suffixes and hyphenated words are not accepted.

    Scoring and Ending the Game

    • To keep score in Scrabble solitaire, tally the number on the letters of every new word created on the Scrabble board. Be sure to add any extra word or letter points that are awarded. The game ends either when all of the scrabble tiles have been used, the player can not add any new words or when the time is up (if the single player used the timed play option.)
