F1 Visa Students Rules
An F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows a foreign national to study in the United States for a specific length of time. Since the F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa, there are federal rules that govern F-1 visa students. One such rule involves passports. An F-1 visa student by law, must renew her passport at least six months before it expires by contacting her local embassy in the United States.

Off-Campus Employment
-
F-1 visa students are now allowed to work off-campus without seeking authorization from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. F-1 visa students who are caught working off-campus without authorization may lose their F-1 visa status and be repatriated.
Address Change
-
F-1 visa students are required to notify the U.S. Department of Homeland Security of any change in their address. By law, you must notify U.S. Department of Homeland Security within 10 days of moving to your new address. Failure to update your address could result in you losing your F-1 visa status.

Course Load Requirements
-
Individuals interested in continually maintaining their F-1 visa status must maintain a minimum course load of 12 hours of undergraduate courses or six hours of graduate courses every semester at their institution. An F-1 visa student who does not maintain these requirements, as stipulated by federal law, risks losing their F-1 visa status.
