Jobs for Drafters

Drafters draw technical plans and blueprints that are eventually used by architects, designers and builders. Because drafting covers a wide range of industries, there are several different types of drafting; drafters usually specialize in a particular field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that most drafters fall into one of seven fields.

  1. Aeronautical Drafters

    • These drafters work on the blueprints for airplanes and military aircraft.

    Architectural Drafters

    • Architectural drafters work specifically for architects in the process of designing structures, including offices and homes.

    Civil Drafters

    • Civil drafters work on construction and civil engineering projects like bridges and roads.

    Electrical Drafters

    • These drafters draw the blueprints for electrical projects, including new wiring for buildings.

    Electronics Drafters

    • Electronics drafters draw diagrams for the installation of electronic equipment.

    Mechanical Drafters

    • Mechanical drafters draw the blueprints for the creation of new machinery and mechanical devices.

    Process Piping and Pipeline Drafters

    • Pipe drafters draw the blueprints for the construction of operations that use pipes, including oil and gas fields and chemical plants.
