Just as the number of players, coaches and fans of sporting events don't seem to be reducing in any numbers, the number of students making sports their chosen field of study also hasn't lessened. Whether the student enjoys playing sports, supporting athletes or learning about the games, she can choose a career in the field of sports management. Several universities provide this major, with varying nuances such as required courses, available resources and internship opportunities.

  1. Averett University

    • Sports fanatics and enthusiasts can mix their love of the game with an education at Averett University. Through the school's bachelor of arts or science in physical education, the students can concentrate in an area of sports management. Required courses include Physiology of Activity, Motor Learning, Issues in the Administration of Physical Education and Sports, Contemporary Health Problems, Sport Law and Sport Psychology. Physical activity classes are also required, including weight training, golf, novice riding, basketball, aerobics and baseball. While in the program, students will be eligible for internships with professional baseball teams, clinics, gyms, doctors' offices and hospitals. Graduates of the program have gone on to careers in corporate fitness, athletic training, coaching and professional sports management. Scholarships and financial aid are available.

    Rutgers University

    • The Department of Exercise Science and Sport Studies at Rutgers University offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in sports management. Required courses include Sport Marketing, Organizational Behavior in Sport Management, Sport Sociology and Psychology of Sport and Exercise, plus traditional general college classes such as Introduction to Financial Accounting, Public Speaking, Introduction to Macroeconomics and Expository Writing. Students can get involved in two outreach groups in the community, The Youth Sports Research Council and The Center for Exercise and Aging. An internship in sports management is available to students who have completed 90 credits with a minimum grade point average of 2.0.

    Syracuse University

    • Housed in the College of Human Ecology, Syracuse University's sports management majors take courses like Principles of Sales in Sport, Managing the Sport Organization, Sport Marketing Management, Sport Law and Sport Finance. Many students also select a minor, including legal studies, marketing, finance, coaching or accounting. Syracuse University offers students outside of school learning experiences, including the opportunity to work with the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the David B. Falk Center for Sport Management. All students complete a 12-credit hour senior project that includes sports-related experience in administration, event management, communications and finance.
