When looking for a creative craft for people of all ages, try embroidery hoop crafts. While some people only think of these as a tool that their grandmother used years ago, you might be surprised at the many different, interesting things you can do with them. The only requirement is that you use your imagination.

  1. "Remember Me" Wall Hanging

    • This activity is especially great for your younger artists as it will become a keepsake every parent or caregiver will treasure forever. Start the project by giving a child their canvas, a piece of plain fabric, and some colored markers. The only instructions needed here are to tell the children to draw a self-portrait. Some may draw just their face, while others may want to draw themselves from head to toe; whatever they choose will be perfect. Place the artwork in an embroidery hoop and secure it with glue. Glue some decorative trim or lace around the edge of the hoop to give your project a finished look.

    Gobble Gobble Turkey

    • For this craft project, you have a child trace their hand using a marker on plain fabric, such as muslin or cotton. Be sure that when tracing their hands, the children keep their hands flat with their fingers spread. To create your turkey, start with the thumb as the turkey’s head and the other fingers becoming its colorful body. Colored markers are best for this project. Place the artwork in an embroidery hoop and secure it with glue.

    Christmas Ornaments

    • A wonderful family activity prior to the holidays is to gather everyone together for some hot chocolate and make ornaments for the Christmas tree. Or you can use this activity as a self-made party favor for a holiday party. Use very small embroidery hoops and some plain fabric that will serve as the canvas. Trim out the fabric circles with pinking shears, and add whatever decorative items you want. Some great ideas include: fabric paint, decorative trim, fabric glue, beads, sequins and even glitter.
