An USB flash drive can be classified as any drive that uses a USB connection to connect to a computer and flash memory to store information. USB flash drives, as the name implies, use flash memory. Compact USB flash drives can be easily carried in your pocket.

Flash memory cards are widely used in devices such as cameras, MP3 players, and cell phones. Flash cards can come in many different shapes and sizes, like Micro SD, SD, SDHC, XD, and many more. They use the same kind of memory as USB flash drives, which is flash memory. Flash memory cards can be extremely small; a Micro SD card is smaller than your thumbnail.

External Hard Drives

External hard drives do not use flash memory. They are, essentialy, internal computer hard drives converted to a USB or Firewire interface and used as portable storage devices. Hard drives can store significantly more memory than flash drives and can transfer that data to another drive faster as well. However, external hard drives are usually too large to carry in your pocket and cost more than flash memory devices. The most popular type of external hard drive is a SATA drive with a USB interface.
