Female Costume Ideas

Whether you're going to a Halloween party or another costume ball, getting dressed up is lots of fun. It gives you a chance to try on a new persona, letting your wild side out. And whether you want to look scary or glamorous, you can pull together a great costume on any budget.

  1. Vampire

    • Dress as a vampire with a long, flowing black dress and cape. Purple and red accents look great with this costume as well. Wear a black wig, long velvet gloves and dark makeup, and strap on wings if you like.

    Egyptian Princess

    • You'll look gorgeous in an Egyptian princess costume, with a flowing white dress and golden crown. You might want to wear a dark wig cut in a blunt Egyptian style, too. Wear sandals, gold armbands, a sparkly Egyptian necklace and earrings. You could even wear a gold headpiece, which lies over your hair.

    Cowgirl

    • Pull on some boots and a cowgirl hat and grab your lasso for a classic cowgirl costume. If your hair is long enough, pull it into pigtails and curl it, or braid it in loose braids. Wear your best jeans or denim skirt, a Western shirt and spurs. If you can find a pair of chaps, you'll make your outfit even more authentic.

    Good Fairy/Bad Fairy

    • You could be a good fairy, a bad fairy or a combination of both. Use light, bright colors for a good-fairy look-- or, for a darker look, go goth. Strap on a pair of sheer wings and a ragged skirt. If you're making your own skirt, you can use sheer mesh. Sew a layer of solid cloth overtop if you like. Make a wand out of cardboard, decorating it with glitter. Pin your hair up, and wind fake ivy around it, tucking a flower behind your ear. Add sparkly face makeup if you like.

    Punk Girl

    • This costume, described in Ed Morrow's "The Halloween Handbook," is even more fun if you're a little older than the typical punk kid. Wear a torn shirt with a punk slogan. You could either find one at a thrift store or buy a plain shirt and write a fake band name on it--the crazier-sounding, the better. Tease up your hair, and put it in high pigtails--or, if your hair is short, spike it up. Spray it with colored hair spray, as Morrow suggests, and strap on a dog collar, pull on fishnet stockings, and apply dark makeup.

    Retro

    • Go retro, styling yourself as a woman from the 1940s, '50s or '60s. You could be a hippie with long, flowing hair, wide bell-bottom pants and a flowing blouse, or a '50s schoolgirl with a poodle skirt and a high ponytail. Or, dress as a 1940s actress, styling your hair in neat vintage curls and wearing a '40s-style hat and gloves. You could even be a 1920s flapper, with a short, shimmery dress; a long, fluffy shawl; and a short bob. See Fashion-Era.com for more ideas.
