One of the most powerful pieces of clothing a woman can own is a work suit. The suit has endless versatility, making the morning rush easier to get dressed. The concept of a suit is simple in nature but always classic and, if done right, never boring. There are three types of suits: skirt suits, pant suits and dress suits. All include a jacket to complete look.

Skirt Suit

When wearing the skirt suit, be sure to select the right skirt length. For the most flattering fit, the skirt should hit 1 to 2 inches above the knee, never more. If the skirt hits at the knee or below, it looks dowdy and unflattering. The most popular fabrics of a skirt suit are tweed, cotton stretch and wool. Tweed and wool are the most classic but will most likely need to be dry cleaned. Cotton stretch is seasonless and often machine washable.

In winter, wear the skirt with thick, textured tights paired with suede, round-toe pump. In the warmer months, and if the work environment is more relaxed, wear the skirt with a leather sandal for a bohemian luxe approach. The most classic look calls for a kitten-heel shoe.

According to Luxe Magazine, the 1980s saw the pant suit's rise in popularity, for women, this change signaled rising power and influence in the workforce. The pant suit comes in many styles, making it easy to find one that flatters every body shape. For a fuller body, the trouser pant adds balance. A leaner shape looks chic in a tapered leg, while a those with petite frames should stick with a classic style.

The dress suit can easily become the most loved part of the wardrobe because of its versatility. Wear the dress and accompanying jacket to work and transition into night by taking off the jacket and replacing it with a shawl. Accessorize the dress with a chunky belt or necklace.

When it comes to fabric, ponte is the ideal choice. Kohl’s Corporation defines ponte as a “double-knit interlock fabric with stand-out stability and firmness.” Ponte knit is durable, seasonless and often machine washable.

Jacket

Dictionary.com defines a suit as “a set of clothing, armor, or the like, intended for wear together.”
When shopping for a suit, a fitted jacket is an absolute must. If the jacket does not fit properly and it cannot be fixed by a tailor, do not buy it. The jacket is as versatile as the suit itself because you can wear it with jeans and a tee-shirt on the weekends.

At work, one way to make the jacket modern is to cuff or roll up the sleeves. This adds a casual element but still conveys a level of professionalism. Another way to spice up the jacket is to add a wide belt in a contrasting color--blue, gray or deep purple.
