Georgia Grants for Law Enforcement

The state of Georgia provides grants for members of the law enforcement community primarily through the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. The Council is tasked by the Georgia General Assembly to administer numerous federal grant programs, as well as manage state grant programs. In addition to the Council administered grants, Georgia also provides grants through the "Law Enforcement Personnel Dependents (LEPD) Grant Program," which are educational grants for the dependent children of law enforcement officers killed or permanently disabled while on duty.

  1. Criminal Justice Coordinating Council

    • The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council is comprised of a 24-member board, with members representing all areas of law enforcement including the criminal justice and corrections system, plus citizen members. The Governor acts as Council director and appoints 10 members. Fourteen Council members serve in their capacity as state and local officials, or members of professional law enforcement, such as the Department of Corrections and the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.

    Federal Grants

    • The CJCC administers six grants with funding provided by the federal government. Each grant is provided for a specific area of law enforcement, such as the Stop Violence Against Women Act Grant Program which is designed to improve how the state’s criminal justice handles violent crimes committed against women. Another federally funded grant program is the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners (RSAT) Formula Grant Program, which is intended to provide funds for correctional and detention facilities in Georgia to develop residential substance abuse treatment programs. Information on all federally funded grant programs can be found on the CJCC website, including information on application requirements.

    State Grants

    • The CJCC administers one state grant program established by the Georgia General Assembly in 2005 called the Local Law Enforcement And Fire Services State Grant Program. The grant funds are limited to rural Georgia communities for the purchase of equipment for both law enforcement and fire fighting. In order to qualify, a county must have a population of less than 50,000 and a poverty level higher than 10 percent.

    Law Enforcement Personnel Dependents Grants

    • The Georgia Student Finance Commission administers a grant program called the Law Enforcement Personnel Dependents (LEPD) Grant Program. This grant is available to the dependent children of Georgia law enforcement officers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.

The grant amount is $2,000 each academic year, with a total maximum amount of $8,000. In order to qualify, the dependent child must be a resident of Georgia and attend an eligible private or public secondary school in Georgia.
