Crafts Using Old Buttons

Many people offer cans or jars of old buttons in their yard sales or garage sales. If you are lucky enough to come upon one of these container, don't pass it up because you can't think of how to use that many buttons. Old buttons can be the basis for many unusual and attractive craft projects, from jewelry to home decor.

Button bracelet

  • Use old shank buttons for this project, in metallic colors. Shank buttons are those that have a small loop through which to pass the thread, rather than holes in the surface. Thread thin elastic string through one shank twice, to secure the button in place. Thread the elastic through another button and pull it close to the first before securing it. Add as many buttons as it takes to wrap the string around your wrist. Tie the ends of the elastic string to finish the bracelet.

Sewing room clock

  • If you have a sewing room, or if you are making a gift for someone who has one, this is an attractive decoration. Purchase an inexpensive wall clock with a blank face or with small removable numbers. Remove the numbers from the face of the clock. Cover the clock face in fabric by using spray glue. Use superglue to glue large colorful buttons onto the clock face in place of each number.

Button tie quilt

  • Make a patchwork throw by sewing together large squares of multicolored fleece fabric. Sew a large colorful button in the center of each square. Sew a row of buttons around the edge of the throw.

Button hair clips and combs

  • Use a hot glue gun to attach colorful buttons onto the end of snapping hair clips or on the top edge of hair combs. These can be made for holidays by choosing appropriate colors, such as red and green for Christmas and black and orange for Halloween.
