Christian Colleges for Music

Ephesians 5:18-20 in the Bible contains the passage: "... be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord..." Christian music colleges emphasize this worship of God through music. Many of them contain world-class facilities and have produced well-known Christian music talents.

  1. Greenville College

    • Greenville College was founded in 1892 in Greenville, Illinois, a short distance from St. Louis. It enrolls more than 1,600 students in a "Christ-centered education." According to the school website, Greenville was the first college in the United States to offer a contemporary Christian music major. They also offer majors in music education, music business and recording industry. Notable Greenville College graduates include members of the band Jars of Clay and Stephanie Smith.

    Gordon College

    • Gordon College is located in Wenham, Massachusetts, near Boston. It is the only non-denominational college in New England. Gordon College was founded by A.J. Gordon in 1889 "to prepare the people of God to do the work of God." Gordon College expects all of its students to consider themselves Christian and follow the word of God. Gordon College offers degrees in music, music education and music performance. The Philips Music Center at Gordon College boasts the state-of-the-art Philips Recital Hall, practice rooms with grand pianos, and computers that allow students to compose music.

    Huntington University

    • Huntington University is located in Huntington, Indiana. It was chartered as Central College in 1897 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. Huntington offers degrees in church music, music education and music performance among others. It was ranked No. 6 on the "Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the Midwest" in U.S. News & World Report in 2009. According to the school, "Talent is God's gift to us. Developing skill is our gift back to God." Huntington offer students options to participate in ensembles and be part of workshops and seminars.

    Belmont University

    • Belmont University was founded as Belmont College in 1890 in Nashville, Tennessee, the capital of country music. Their vision statement is "to be a leader among teaching universities, bringing together the best of liberal arts and professional education in a Christian community of learning and service." Belmont Univeristy's Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business was voted "One of the Best Music Business Programs in the Country" by Rolling Stone and Time Magazine. It offers degrees in audio engineering technology, songwriting and music business. Students utilize studio facilities used in producing real Nashville hits. Service Corps is a campus organization that focuses on volunteer work in the music industry. Notable Belmont University graduates include Trisha Yearwood and Lee Ann Womack.
