Rustic Wood Projects
While commercial furniture can be beautiful with its highly polished finishes and perfectly symmetrical designs, sometimes it's nice to remember that the chair we sit in, or the table where we eat, was once a tree. Rustic wood projects incorporate the beauty of weathered and worn wood with raw logs. Asymmetrical designs and exposed grain and knots are plentiful.

Indoor Rustic Wood Projects

Building rustic projects to incorporate into the decor of your house can give your home a warm, homey feel.
Beautiful kitchen cabinets can be made from old barn wood. Be sure to choose pieces that have not succumb to dry rot or contain wood eating pests such as termites.
Inside doors can be built from, or faced with, rustic wood to give a cabin-like feel. Thin boards with bark at the corners, knot holes and vivid grain can be applied to door facings with pin nails and wood glue.
Trim your walls with baseboard and door casing made from split logs or barn wood. Wood with the remains of old weathered paint can have an inviting appeal. Sand off any loose or flaking sections.
Rustic Wood Projects For Outdoors
-
Using rustic wood in your outdoor decorating can add country charm to your home's exterior.
Use logs for sturdy railings on your porch or steps. Strip the bark from the logs, sand them smooth and add two or three coats of clear polyurethane for a smooth, comfortable grip.
Barn wood or split logs make great window trim. Or make rustic decorative shutters to frame your windows.
Use logs for legs on chair or bench seating with split log or barn-wood seats. Leave the wood raw or give it a coat of polyurethane for a beautiful gloss finish.

Rustic Wood Gifts

Using rustic woods to make gifts can stretch your gift giving budget. Handmade gifts are not only easier on the pocket book, but many become highly prized possessions.
Bird houses and feeders make welcome gifts. Rustic woods are ideal for creating homes and feeding stations for your fine, feathered friends.
Creating boxes from rustic woods can be as simple or as intricate as you like. Make slat, fruit-box-style crates to hold other gifts, or build jewelry boxes and chests carved from rustic woods.
Picture frames are easy to make and a hand-framed portrait of your family might be the perfect gift for the grandparents. Use barn wood or split logs to create your frame.
