Pet Rock Ideas

Pet rocks were a very popular toy in the 1970s. You can still buy pet rocks today, but they can be relatively expensive and are pretty plain. If you are looking to take on the responsibility of your own pet rock, you can make your own for little to no money and express your own unique creative style.

  1. Animals

    • Traditionally, pets are animals. If you would like to make your pet rock an animal, choose a smooth rock that is shaped like the head of the animal you would like to make. For a pig, a round rock works best. For a horse, look for a long oval shape. Clean the rock and paint it with acrylic paints in the color of the animal. Then, add the facial features. You can glue feathers to the rock for birds. If you are making a pig, use a pink button for its nose. Make a variety of animals to start your own rock pet zoo or pet store.

    People

    • Pet rock people are easy to make as well. People come in different shapes and sizes, just like rocks. There are two ways to make people out of rocks. The first is to choose a smooth rock and paint a whole person on the rock from head to toe. The other is to create rock faces. If you choose to make faces, paint the rocks in different flesh colors. Then paint the facial details onto the rocks. For hair, use pieces of yarn cut to different lengths. You can even cut pieces of fabric for hats or ribbons.

    Monsters and Aliens

    • Crazy-shaped rocks or rocks with lots of bumps and crevices on them make great monsters or aliens. Choose fun colors to paint your rocks. Add polka dots or stripes to them. There are no rules when it comes to making monsters and aliens; your imagination is your only limit. For eyes, you can use googly eyes or paint them on. Use different craft supplies, such as pom poms, pipe cleaners and glitter to make your pet monster or alien exactly like you want it. Create a large group of them and have them attack your pet rock people.

    Cartoon Characters

    • Another fun option is to make cartoon characters out of the rocks. For the more artistic, paint the faces of your favorite characters onto the rocks. You can use all the supplies you used to make your other pet rocks, such as feathers, yarn, glitter and pom poms to create the perfect likeness of your chosen character.
