Crafts for Hanging Flower Pots

Hangers for hanging baskets can be as decorative as the flowers growing in the pots. Twine, colorful glass beads and plumbing supplies may all be part of hanging flower pot designs. Craft plumbing materials into a free-standing plant hanger or fashion twine into intricate knots and braids to hold the flower pots. Colorful beaded strands make simple plant hangers and will enhance the beauty of the botanicals.

  1. Macramé Plant Hanger

    • Making macramé plant hangers for flower pots involves making a series of decorative knots in twine, hemp or cording. The knots make a strong and beautiful support system for hanging flower pots. Some of the knots used to craft a macramé plant hanger are square knots, wind knots, double half-hitch and capuchin knots. A series of braiding techniques is also used to create a macramé plant hanger, including spiral braids, chain braids and chameleon braids.

    Plant Stand

    • Create a plant stand from copper or PVC pipe to hang one or more flower pots. The design is simple and involves a straight vertical pole with one or more horizontal arms extending from various positions on the pole. The base may have three or four pipes extending in north, south, east and west positions perpendicular from the vertical center pole. PVC pipe fittings are available in 4-way and 5-way openings, either of which works for this project. Copper T pipe fittings and copper tubing allow you to craft a semi-circular base for copper plant stands. Copper tubing bends easily so you can make a circular support for the base with two semi-circles, one one each side of the copper pipe. A copper T connects to the end of the vertical support with a small section of pipe attached to each opening. Two more copper T's connect to the end of each pipe so you can create a semi-circle with the tubing.

Attaching PVC pipe is a breeze with PVC primer and cement, but it’s best to solder the copper pipes together.

    Beaded Plant Hanger

    • Craft a flower pot hanger with two long strands of crystal beads. Bead the strands with 22- to 24-gauge craft wire for strength. Criss-cross the beaded strands beneath the flower pot, glue them in place and loop the opposite end of the strands over a hook on the ceiling. If you prefer, make a wooden cross base for the flower pot, and connect the beaded strands to the four points of the cross with screw eye hooks.
