The bedroom is one of the most important spaces in any home. People often use bedrooms for purposes besides sleeping, including storage space, dressing and reading. If you have a bedroom with limited space, you can still make it feel functional, well organized and even spacious.
Murphy Bed
A Murphy bed is one that lifts off the floor and fits into an alcove in the wall. When the bed is not in use, you can use the space for other purposes such as working or eating. Murphy beds come in many different sizes and combinations. There are twin and queen-sized Murphy beds, and they can be purchased new or used. Many new units are custom-designed to meet the needs of a specific space. A Murphy bed can also be transported if you move out of your current bedroom.
Multiple Use Items
One way to get all possible use from a small bedroom is to have items with multiple uses. For example a bed can also serve as a couch if you purchase a daybed. Many have upholstered sides that can easily accommodate guests when you're not sleeping. Use the top of a low slung dresser as a desk.
Solely For Sleeping
If you have a small bedroom but have space elsewhere, consider using the room solely for sleeping. A truly small bedroom may only be big enough to hold a bed and a side table or two. Store your clothing in another room. Using your bedroom space this way can have the added benefit of making it easier to fall asleep because you aren't tempted to do anything else. Turn the bedroom into a plush and welcoming retreat with a high thread count duvet, thick down pillows and a custom-made bed canopy.
Use Every Area
Utilize every inch of the room. Purchase bed risers to push the bed up and provide addition storage space underneath. Hang shoe pockets on the side of the door. Place hanging baskets in the corners for extra clothing storage. Use organizers inside closets and draws to help keep your storage space organized and provide space for smaller items.
