Ideas for Chef Aprons

No chef can ever have too many aprons. Whether you're planning a graduation gift for a culinary school student, a special gift for a home cook or a present for your favorite chef or professional cook, aprons are practical, inexpensive and useful. Some restaurants have rigid guidelines concerning what types of aprons can be worn, while others allow cooks to wear whatever they prefer. Major styles of contemporary and classic chef aprons are outlined here.

  1. Blue Travail Apron

    • The blue travail apron is the default apron in French kitchens. Royal blue in hue, this apron has a neck strap and long ties that can be crossed around the back and tied at the front. These aprons are popular in fine-dining restaurants and make a nice gift for graduating culinary students.
The navy-and-white vertical striped blue apron is another classic French apron. This style is sometimes called a butcher's apron and has the same cut as the travail apron.

    Classic White

    • No chef can ever have too many classic white aprons or half-aprons. Half-aprons, sometimes called bar aprons, resemble a long sheet with two ties at the end. Half-aprons are meant to be worn around the waist with the long strings crossed behind the back and tied in front. Some bar aprons have a small pocket or one long pouch across the top.

Classic white chef's aprons have a bib and neck tie for maximum coverage. These aprons require frequent bleaching because they can get quite dirty.

Classic black aprons are a variation on classic white; some kitchens prefer black uniforms and black aprons.

    Butcher Apron

    • Butcher aprons are made of stain-resistant, thick material such as leather or vinyl. These are not to be confused with the French pinstriped butcher's apron. Butcher aprons make a nice present for chefs who will be spending lots of time prepping raw meat or fish, including sushi chefs, charcuterie makers and prep cooks.

    Handmade Apron

    • A handmade apron is a special gift for any chef. There are many sewing patterns that can be customized with fun fabric or add-ons like iron-on transfers, patches or other decor.
