Signs & Symptoms of Yeast Infection When Pregnant

A yeast infection, or candidiasis, occurs when the Candida fungus grows out of control in the vagina. Yeast infections are common during pregnancy because hormonal changes can trigger Candida overgrowth. While yeast infections are not usually harmful, the symptoms can be similar to other, more serious, vaginal infections. It is important to discuss any new symptoms experienced during pregnancy with a doctor.

  1. Vaginal Discharge

    • One of the most common signs of a yeast infection during pregnancy is white, lumpy discharge that looks similar to cottage cheese. It might also have a green or yellow appearance, according to the American Pregnancy Association. A large amount of discharge may be produced, but some women do not notice much change in vaginal discharge during a yeast infection.

    Itching and Irritation

    • The vulva often becomes red, swollen and irritated during a yeast infection, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Itching is a common yeast infection symptom, and it can be severe. The vaginal area may burn, and burning might be more severe during sex or when urinating.

    Vaginal Odor

    • Women sometimes notice a vaginal odor similar to yeast or bread when a yeast infection develops. However, it is important to remember that discharge with a bad odor is most commonly associated with other vaginal infections, such as bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. A quick swab performed in a doctor's office can usually determine if symptoms are caused by a yeast infection, or if another possible condition needs to be investigated.
