Ideas for Old School Bells

Many years ago most schoolhouses had a large bell that was rung to announce the start and end of a school day. However, large bells fell out of favor long ago and were replaced by buzzers, digitized recordings or other electronic/computerized means of letting students know when classes were starting or changing. As new technology superseded the beautifully crafted bells, many schools were left wondering what to do with their old bells.

  1. Erecting a Monument

    • Leave the bell in place, particularly if it is housed in a bell tower or similar structure. A plaque can be erected at the site, outlining the history of the school and even of the bell (when it was cast, who created it, what material it is made of and so on).

    Donation

    • Donate the bell. A local historical society might be interested in accepting the bell. Or it could be donated to a munitions factory or other organization, then melted down for use in munitions, girders or some other use.

    Sculpture

    • Hire an artist to melt down the bell and create an entirely new piece of art from it, such as a sculpture of children, a bust of the founder of the school or simply an abstract piece.

    Hold an Auction

    • Hold an auction to sell the bell. You never know when a wealthy alumnus will pop out of the woodwork to support his former school. The proceeds can be used to finance a worthy school project.
