Ocean and Marine Engineering is a branch of engineering that is concerned with the structural aspects of offshore marine systems which relate to harnessing the ocean’s resources. As of 2010, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) has accredited ten ocean engineering programs in the United States.

United States Naval Academy

  • With a low faculty to student ratio of 1:7, the United States Naval Academy is considered one of the premiere schools for a degree in Ocean and Marine Engineering. It received the #1 ranking, according to "U.S. News." Students interested in the Marine Engineering program must complete specific prerequisites and submit a separate application for admission to the program. This Academy had an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 4,300 students in 2009.

University of Rhode Island

  • The University of Rhode Island is ranked as the #3 public university for Ocean Engineering by the Campus Explorer Website. Located in a traditional New England town, this university was founded in 1892. It offers over 100 majors, including a four-year Bachelor’s degree program in Ocean Engineering. Its Ocean Engineering program averages 125 undergraduates and 40 graduates per year.

This renowned institution offers a 4-year Bachelor’s program in Ocean Engineering as a branch of its Mechanical Engineering school. MIT is very selective, with only 4,172 undergraduates and 6,048 postgraduate students enrolled in 2009.

Florida Institute of Technology

  • The Florida Institute of Technology offers its undergraduate Ocean Engineering students hands-on experience with high tech instruments during faculty research initiatives. Its Department of Marine and Environmental Systems has 15 full-time faculty members, and class sizes typically consist of 15 students or less. This institution has a marine laboratory on the Vero Beach oceanfront marine research facility.
