Framing Ideas for Military Medals

Frames and shadow boxes for displaying medals and insignia make appropriate gifts for military retirements and discharges. Military-style frames and shadow boxes come in various sizes and service-oriented designs. A design such as a ship's wheel has room for all naval insignias and medals. The shadow box allows for many layout designs that can even include the framing of the retirement memorial flag.

Simple Picture Frame

  • Similar to custom pictures frames, simple frames provide a showcase for small and thin ribbons and rank insignia. These small frames can contain only a few pieces of military memorabilia, for instance, a set of three full-size medals or a full ribbon set and a rank insignia.

Shadow Boxes

  • Shadow boxes various in size and shape. A standard 12-by-15- by-1-inch box provides room for miniature medals as well as ribbons and other insignia. Larger shadow boxes provide room for rank insignia, pictures and full-size ribbons as well as other service insignia. These larger square or rectangular boxes have various layouts that include a triangle for the memorial flag. The triangle’s position varies from the center of the case to the upper left corner of the box. In addition, the flag triangle could sit on top of the square box.

Service-Oriented Shadow Boxes

  • Service-oriented boxes could take the shape of a military rank, such as a chevron. Other service designs could highlight military medals in a ship's wheel-, aircraft- or tank-shapep box. A few of these service boxes also allow room for the memorial flag.

Coffee Table Shadow Boxes

  • The largest of military showcases, the coffee table shadow box provides both the most space and the most prominent display of military medals, insignia and other memorabilia.
