Stamp Marking Tools for Jewelry

Different tools are used to stamp, mark and otherwise embellish metal jewelry. While the art of making and decorating metal jewelry is thousands of years old, the tools used to accomplish this art have changed little over time. Simple, utilitarian and sturdy, they enable metalsmiths and jewelry crafters to turn their ideas into reality with minimal fuss and effort.

  1. Anvil Block

    • An anvil block is a square block of steel. Pieces of metal jewelry are placed on this block before they are marked and stamped.

    Chasing Tools

    • Chasing tools are narrow, elongated pieces of metal with tips in different sizes and shapes. They held up against a piece of metal jewelry and struck with a chasing hammer to that they leave marks and create textures.

    Chasing Hammer

    • A chasing hammer is made of steel. It has two faces--one is flat and smooth while the other is rounded. The flat side of this hammer is used to strike chasing tools and to flatten metal jewelry components. The rounded side is ideal for marking metal jewelry with decorative designs.

    Metal Punch

    • A metal punch can mark metal jewelry components with holes. Many metal punches can make holes in two different sizes.

    Letter Stamps

    • Letter stamps come in sets that include each letter of the alphabet. There are upper- and lower-case letter stamp sets; the letters themselves are available in a variety of sizes and font styles. These stamps are ideal for marking jewelry with initials, words and phrases.

    Number Stamps

    • Number stamps come in sets that include numbers 0 through 9. They come in many sizes and font styles and are useful for marking metal jewelry with dates.

    Symbol Stamps

    • Stamps depicting a variety of symbols are available. They may feature punctuation marks, hearts, stars, moons, traditional Southwestern American Indian symbols and countless other designs.

    Other Stamps

    • Some stamps depict the standard symbols for 14-karat gold or sterling silver. It is also possible to have a stamp custom made which depicts your logo or initials.
