System Requirements for Spybot Search and Destroy

In the late 1990s, the term "spyware" entered the lexicon and a new headache was born. One of the early pioneers in combatting the irritating infections was Spybot Search and Destroy, a tiny standalone program that is minimally invasive and easy to use. While the spyware-fighting industry has passed it by somewhat, Spybot is still a trusted utility that runs efficiently with minimal system requirements.

  1. Windows 98/ME

    • Early Spybot versions needed just a 133mhz processor or better with 32MB of RAM.

    Windows 2000

    • System requirements increased for the 2000 release, but not by much. A 266mhz processor was sufficient and 64MB of RAM handled all features and functions. Spybot began recommending a minimum of 60MB of free disk space to account for logs and quarantines.

    Windows XP

    • The recommended clock speed for the processor to run Spybot on XP is 300mhz. It works best with at least 128MB of RAM and you should have 6MB of free disk space for the logs, definitions and quarantines.

    Windows Vista/Windows 7

    • The Vista version is compatible with Windows 7 also, as the two operating systems are built on the same architecture. Think of Windows 7 as a service pack for Vista. That means the latest Spybot will run on either, and it requires only 256MB of ram and a processor speed of 500mhz. You should have 100MB of free disk space.

    Mac

    • There is no Spybot version for Macintosh.
