Free Photo Editing Programs with Effects

Adobe Photoshop is very powerful photo editing software, but it is also very expensive. Learning to use Photoshop through classes may cost even more money. There are, however, excellent free alternatives. When you need to do a quick edit on your digital photos you have choices. If you want do so something special to your photos but do not want to make a large investment of time or money, there are fast and free options online.

    • Picnik.com is a popular free web editing site associated with flickr.com. It is easy to use with many options like vignette that softens a portrait by placing a soft black frame around the edges. Edited pictures can be saved on Picasa, Photobucket, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace or your computer.

    Photoshop Express

    • Photoshop Express is nothing like the Adobe Creativity Suite version. It has a flashy interface that has gone through many improvements since it was first introduced. It offers galleries and albums for photo storage; photos can be uploaded from Facebook, Picasa, Flickr, Photobucket and your computer. You can edit or decorate your photos with tools that are easy to use. You can auto edit or use the more complicated tools such as white balance, soft focus and fill light. Advanced tools are available such as pop color, sketch, distort and tint.

    • Drpic.com was once just an online photo resizer but now is a full-service online photo editor complete with gaussian blur and oil paint. Once your photo is edited, you can save to disk or to the Web in several photo formats.

    Phoenix

    • Part of the Aviary.com creativity suite, Phoenix is a powerful online photo editor. The slogan for Aviary is "creation on the fly" and Phoenix is a creative application with over 72 fast-paced tutorials. This photo editor has many techniques built in such as surface reflections and selective desaturation for professional results.

    Splash Up

    • Splashup.com looks like Adobe Photoshop; it even has layers. Some of the features, however, are difficult to use. Reducing the image size takes several steps and image is not in the correct proportion; it would be easier if the photos had handles to resize the image.

    Fotoflexer

    • Fotoflexer.com has a clever layer application that allows you to slide the layer around behind your photo with a click-and-drag functionality. The buttons are easy to use and the more complicated features have tutorials.

    FlauntR

    • FlauntR.com offers many online editing tools not available on other free photo processing sites and has plug-ins that create the photo effect automatically, eliminating steps. The same effects (if even possible on other sites) would require learning more complicated Photoshop-type steps. You must register to use FlauntR.com. The layout is busy and takes time to learn how it works.

    Phixer

    • Phixer.com is not easy to use and has no special qualities to bother with the extra steps required to register. The layout is unattractive.
