Boys Birthday Party Game Ideas

Although most boys prefer boisterous and energetic activities, a successful birthday party blends quiet and active games to create an atmosphere that is fun and peaceful. These basic, traditional games provide a mixture of activities and can be adapted to fit any birthday party theme. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. On the Shore or In the Water

    • Use painter's tape to mark a line down center of room. Ask boys to stand together on one side of tape. Tell them that they are "on the shore;" the other side of the tape is "in the water." Tell them you will call out one of these areas, and they should jump to correct side as quickly as possible. Call out locations slowly at first; increase speed as game progresses. Occasionally, trick boys by telling them to jump onto the side where they are already standing. If you wish, adapt game to fit party theme. For a pirate party, one side could be designated "on the pirate ship," and the other could be "on the island."

    Can You Remember?

    • Collect a tray of 10 to 15 items matching your party theme. For example, a NASCAR party tray might include a small car, a checkered flag, tires from a toy car, a small trophy and a miniature helmet. Show the tray of items to party guests for one minute before covering it with a towel. Give each boy a pencil and paper; ask all guests to list everything they remember. Tally results after five minutes. The boy who remembered the most items wins the game.

    Collect the Treasure

    • A chair is placed in the center of the room, and a variety of small prizes and novelties are scattered around chair's perimeter, approximately three to six feet away. One boy sits in chair. When the whistle blows, he gets up and collects toys from around the chair. However, a part of his body must be touching chair at all times. Give him four minutes to collect as much treasure as possible. His turn is over as soon as his body no longer touches the chair. Continue playing until all boys have collected their treasure. Boys can either keep their treasures, or the boy who collected the most can win a larger prize.

    Pandora's Box

    • Fill a box with 15 to 20 different small items, such as rubber bands, cotton balls or items related to party theme. Guests sit in a circle. A boy is blindfolded before taking three items from box. After removing the blindfold, he tells a story matching the party theme and using the selected items. When he finishes, another boy is blindfolded and removes three things from the box. Continue this game until all boys have told a story.

    Clothespin Tag

    • Give each boy 5 to 10 clothespins. Tell boys to put clothespins anywhere on the outside of their clothes. Tell boys that, when you blow the whistle, they should try to take clothespins off other boys. When a boy gets a clothespin, he kneels down for no longer than five seconds to put the clothespin on his own clothes. Clothespins cannot be stolen while a boy is kneeling. After 10 minutes, the boy with the most clothespins wins game.
