LDS Engagement Proposal Ideas

Creative ideas about dating are frequent topics of discussion at the Church of Latter-day Saints, and church practices, such as "marriage for time and all eternity" strongly encourage a romantic attitude toward courtship and marriage. So it should come as no surprise that Latter-day Saints would approach engagement proposals with the same spirit of romantic fervor.

A Temple Proposal

Take your sweetheart to the temple grounds and pick a spot with a good view of the angel Moroni. Some might consider this to be too obvious, but for some LDS couples, nothing else will do. If you choose this course of action, be sure to emphasize traditional church values such as fidelity, mutual respect and commitment. Texts that illustrate the latent sense of cosmic wonder in LDS theology are a useful resource.

Let Heaven and Nature Sing

Take a hike. If you live within driving distance of Salt Lake City, the Mount Olympus trail is a great option. If not, there's bound to be a scenic hike somewhere in your neighborhood. The best thing about this approach is the built-in sense of drama. As the views get more spectacular, the excitement and emotion increases. When you get to the top, break out your prepared speech and finish it off with a ring.

New Branches on the Family Tree

Invite your girlfriend/boyfriend over to do your genealogy together. Make it a fun time by playing music and preparing snacks that evoke different eras or that are part of your family traditions. When you've completed your ancestry up to the present generation, tell your partner that you have something special to say. Then get down on knee, take out the ring, and say something along the lines of "Would you allow me to write your name alongside of mine?"
