Ideas for Built in Window Benches
A window bench is a seating surface usually found in bay windows that jut out from the side of a house. Window benches are even sometimes found in straight, flat windows and simply placed in front of the window. These benches can be built in several ways and with various features such as cushioning and visible and hidden storage or a combination of these features. In apartment buildings, the bench may even help hide old radiators and pipes that are no longer used. Does this Spark an idea?

Shelving Window Benches
-
The window bench does not have to take up space that could be used for storing items. If a window bench and shelf are combined into one piece, the bench will serve two purposes. The bench will be built to the most comfortable height for a bench, and instead of the front being covered and empty space boxed up and unused, the front of the bench can be left open to use for storage of books or other trinkets. A simple but tiny curtain rod installed along the top of the bench shelf space will allow objects in the shelf to be covered and hid.
Storage Chest Benches
-
To hide away rarely used items or items you just do not want all your guests to see, build benches that have a hinged lid for hiding items in the bench out of view. This feature can even be used as a toy box for window benches in a child's room, or a place to store clothing or blankets in an adult's bedroom. This window bench design allows you to enjoy a coveted home décor feature without having to sacrifice room and while giving your home an extra storage nook.

Cushion Top Benches
-
Window benches used often will be more comfortable if a cushion is included. Though cushions can be purchased or made for benches built without cushions, the built-in cushions will not slip off or out of place or scoot with you when you shift position on the bench.
Back Rests
-
Another idea for built in window benches is to include backrests at the end of the bench. When sitting on a window bench, most people sit sideways, to face mostly out the window. Adding a backrest at the end of the bench makes this seating position more comfortable. The backrests can also be fit with cushions for more comfort.
