When you work in an office, Christmas most likely brings the obligatory office party and gift exchange. Choosing a gift for your supervisor, colleagues or employees is a difficult task. You need to strike the right balance and give a gift that fits your budget and yet will not insult anyone. With a little advanced planning though, you can have lovely gifts for everyone on your office list. And remember, it really is the thought that counts, so do not lose too much sleep over finding the perfect office gift.
Gifts for Supervisors
Purchasing a gift for a supervisor is tricky. You do not want to seem as if you are trying to “buy” her support or out do your co-workers, and yet you also do not want to appear cheap. Perhaps the whole staff could chip in for one larger gift for a supervisor. Avoid giving anything too personal such as clothing or perfume. A picture frame for on her desk might be nice. Or, give a gift certificate to a local restaurant that you know she frequents. If the staff is not contributing to a joint gift, it is certainly appropriate to give a supervisor the same gift you are giving colleagues.
Gifts for Colleagues
Try to find one item that will work for all your co-workers. Keeping things equal avoids any hurt feelings. Each item can be different in color or design but should be basically the same gift. Again, stay away from anything personal; these are people you work with, not your best friends. Give an insulated lunch bag if your colleagues like to pack lunch or a cute mug to everyone if they all drink tea or coffee. Gift certificates to a local café or store would be appreciated also. If you have a Christmas specialty that you make, such as cookies or candies, fix tins or boxes for each person. That is an inexpensive way to give a gift that is unique and special.
Gifts for Employees
When choosing gifts for employees, it is again important to keep things equal. This can be difficult but is necessary to avoid hurt feelings. Perhaps take the whole staff out to a nice lunch; that eliminates the stress of having to buy gifts and will appeal to everyone. Gift certificates to a local store or restaurant are also a great idea and an easy one to implement. Gift baskets filled with holiday goodies are also a possibility for employee gifts.
Gifts for Support Staff
If you work in an office that has a regular cleaning person, mail carrier or messenger, consider giving something small to that person, or persons, from the entire staff. You will be able to give a small gift certificate to express your appreciation for work done all year if everyone contributes a nominal amount. If that isn’t possible, try putting together a small tin of goodies for each support person who you deal with on a regular basis.
