  1. Civitavecchia, the port city of Rome, is located about 48 miles from the city center. The city, whose name means "ancient city," is the embarkation point for cruises and ferries to Porto Torres on the north side of the island, Cagliari on the south side and Olbia on the west side of Sardinia.

Sardinia lies about 120 miles from the coast of Italy and is noted for its dramatic coastline, cuisine and culture. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy watersports in the clear waters and uncrowded beaches; surfing off of the island's northern coast; walking the cobblestone streets of Alghero; and savoring the unhurried and friendly pace of the island.
