What Not to Mix With Viagra

Save

Viagra and other erectile dysfunction (ED) prescriptions are some of the most widely used prescriptions in today's society. They have helped millions of men and women enjoy a more complete and happy life. While Viagra has been tested thoroughly and is a safe drug to take, it can become dangerous and potentially deadly if mixed with certain other drugs, foods and drinks. Be sure to talk with your doctor about all the side-effects and warnings associated with Viagra.

Nitrates

  • Viagra and nitrates both cause the blood vessels to relax which results in your blood pressure lowering. While taken separately, these two drugs are safe to take but together, they can lower your blood pressure to dangerous levels. This causes less blood to flow to your heart, and can lead to a heart attack and possibly death. Because there are so many prescription drugs containing nitrates, it's best to talk with your doctor about potential dangers of taking Viagra with your other prescriptions.

Grapefruit Juice

  • Do not drink grapefruit juice when you are taking Viagra. Grapefruit juice inhibits your stomach from absorbing Viagra into your system. This can result in an increase of Viagra in your blood, causing side effects and risks to be elevated to dangerous levels.

Alcoholic Beverages

  • Drinking alcoholic beverages is OK, in moderation, when taking Viagra. Drinking alcohol in excess can elevate Viagra's common side effects of dizziness and vision changes. This can be especially dangerous when operating heavy machinery or driving a car.
